Chicken Legs

by The QUeeps

Visitors will step into a tent, one at a time, to be told their fortunes. The uncanny seers inside may read palms, tarot cards, tea leaves, or even entrails. Actually, especially entrails. Yum.

The Queeps formed in 2023, with the creation of the sexy camp hit “They Were a Dracula,” and followed up with the performance installation “Limbo” in 2024. The company has a roster of veteran creator/performers, collected by Summer Olsson, and oriented toward clowning, melodrama, and the macabre. The highest hope of The Queeps is that an audience member will say “that was weird, and I liked it.”

Poster design with insects holding hands circling a mother Leaf Bug in a pentagram, imitating a ritual ceremony. Background is black to red fade in.

An immersive art installation performance where audiences enter a cockroach church (no worries, it is an inclusive church, all insects are invited) and join for a ritualistic ceremony led by puppets, insect-clowns, a marionette bug band, a master of ceremonies initiating new worshippers via roach milk…and the power of the “divine”. The storytelling will incorporate an A/V component (some combination of video projection, original soundscapes, and/or our Trash Television wagon).

Yes, there will be cockroaches (not actual ones) (although we might bring a few dead ones).

Whimsical, with a healthy dose of disturbing, alluring, bizarre; like candy for your eyeballs that makes your brain go: “WTF?”

Themes: satire of religion, embracing the absurd, finding beauty in the deemed ugly.

Alessandra Russo is a multidisciplinary artist, producer, and performer currently based in Arcata, California. A graduate of Dell’Arte International, she is a clown, mask-maker, and producer of ensemble-based devised theater. Her work lives somewhere between ecological inquiry and theatrical mischief: animistic, creature-forward, and driven by a deep love of the more-than-human world… alongside an unwavering belief that stupid shit deserves rigorous attention. She draws on her studies in mycology, botany, and scientific storytelling to create performances that feel equal parts ritual, experiment, and fever dream.

She is a co-founder of Mystical A/V Club, co-producer of the Ouroborotopia performance festival, and loves creating shows with her ensemble, Magenta Mountain. She is currently completing a self-designed program at Cal Poly Humboldt in Scientific Communication through Visual and Performing Arts, and has been clowning with Dell’Arte’s Healthcare Clowning program since 2024.
